Family Food Supply
o I kept the family supplied with rabbits.
o I helped set out fruit trees.
o I cultivated strawberries.

o In the winter when Dad was sick, I was late for school several mornings getting
silage for the diary cows.
o During the winter I spent an hour every afternoon setting up the milking machines
and feeding calves.
o During the summer my job was feeding the hogs.
o I helped vaccinate pigs and dehorn cows.
Land preparation and planting
o I helped make the tobacco plant bed.
o I did part of the plowing.
o I spread fertilizer and disked.
o I helped set tobacco.
Cultivation

o I earned a school letter for making the honor roll all year.
o I received the Rotary award for tying for first place scholastically in the boys
division in my class.

o I earned a school letter for making the honor roll all year.
o I received the Rotary award for having the highest scholastic average of the boys in my
class and attended the annual banquet at Doe Run Inn.
1964 awards
o I was one of the six F.F.A. members from our chapter who had the honor of attending
National F.F.A. convention in Kansas City.
o I was selected as a delegate from the county 4-H Clubs to attend Leadership Conference
in Lexington. I was chosen by the state to be group leader of fifteen that week.
o I received the scholastic award for the Sophomore Class from my F.F.A. Chapter.
o I was awarded an electric drill set for having the best demonstration in the boys
division at the county 4-H rally day.
o I was awarded a medal for having the best farm labor record in the county 4-H clubs.
o I was awarded a medal for my rabbit project which was judged the best in the district
4-H clubs.
1965 awards
o I was accepted by Centre College as a participant in their summer program for
outstanding high school students.
o I was selected as a delegate from the county 4-H clubs to attend leadership Conference
in Lexington. I was chosen by the state to be Speaker of the House of about 50
members at mock sessions of the legislature.
o My tobacco project got first award in my F.F.A. chapter and ranked superior in the
district.
o I was a member of the F.F.A. soil judging team which ranked superior in the district.
I had the third highest individual score in the district.
