William Stith has been shown with the middle initial of T and B and W. One
researcher said the B was for Banks, and his daughter Mary B. was Mary Banks
Stith. My aunt said she had heard at one time that her grandmother Mary's
middle name was something like Brofferd [Aunt Dorothy was very young at the
time].

I am descended from Mary B. Stith and John J. Cowell, i.e.,
John 1, Drury 2, Drury 3, Richard 4, Richard 4, William 5, Mary Stith Cowell
6, Leora Cowell Wylie 7, Grace Wylie Harrity 8, Sara Harrity Deatherage 9.
There are two generations after me, too.

As to the William Stith family move to Tecumseh, Kansas: Congress opened up
Kansas and Nebraska to homesteaders in 1854. Prior to that it had been
Indian territory, and a part of the Louisiana Purchase. Fannie Stith was
born in April of 1859 and from June 1859 until November 1860 not a single
drop of rain fell. The settlers had to face the prospect of prairie fires.
You will note that their next child was born in 1862 in Scotland county MO.
It is possible they were also caught up in the border wars between slavers
and non-slavers.
