Was 1804 the year Stiths first emigrated to Kentucky? One way to try to solve this question is not very scientific but worth examining.

The oldest, Ann (Stith) who married Drury Hardaway, had a son, Benjamin Stith Hardaway, who died in 1813 at age 22 "removing to Kentucky." He was born on Dec. 30, 1791 in VA. Was he by himself or with his family? Another note says: "came to Kentucky in 1812" according to Thos. Foster Hardaway."

Joseph Stith's wife, Nancy Cocke (1761-1842) followed the usual colonial pattern of a baby every other year. Her children were born in the pattern: 1784 - 1786 - 1788 - 1790 - 1792 - 1794 - 1796 - 1798 - 1800 (Dec) - 1803 (June). She was then 42 years old, so that may indicate a natural reason she had no more children. It could also indicate the men could have gone first to Kentucky without their wives.

Lucy (Stith) Jordan's (1761-1822) record is not as clear. However, her youngest was born about 1802. She was 41 at that time.

Next, Elizabeth B. Stith (1762-1830), who married Jesse Adams Moreman, appears to have had her last child in Virginia Nov. 18, 1803. She was 41 years old.

Benjamin Stith and his wife, Phoebe (Cox), had Matthew C. Stith, born in Kentucky in 1807 according to the 1850 Census records. There is no birthdate for their first child, Mary Watkins Stith, but Ben and Phoebe were married in 1800 and Mary Watkins was married in 1817, so she was born at least by 1802. So there is somewhat of a gap between Mary (1802) and Matthew (1807).

Thomas Stith and Rhoda Jones, in whose house the meeting was held, pose a problem. Nancy W.(illa) Stith, their seventh child, was born in 1806, the census says in Virginia. William Jones Stith was born in 1809 and Joseph Stith in 1811 but both died before the census would have revealed their birthplaces. Three years later, Lucy Katharine Stith arrived, 1814, with Benjamin Buckner Stith in 1816.

William Stith and Nancy Jones had a son, Griffin Stith, born in 1802 in Virginia. Next was Benjamin, born in 1803, state not found. Katherine followed but with no birthdate or state. Daughter Martha Stith was born in 1808, in Kentucky.

Richard Stith and Elizabeth Jones daughter, Lucy Stith was born in 1802 in Virginia. Elizabeth "Betsy" Stith was born in 1803, state unknown. The next child was Buckner Jones Stith, born in 1807 in Kentucky. From then she had children in 1810 - 1812 - 1814 - 1816 - 1818- and 1820. Note the gap between 1803 and 1807.

These dates place the women in Virginia or Kentucky, but not necessarily their husbands.

Redford's History of Southern Methodism reports this:

"During the Conference-year commencing in the fall of 1804, this circuit was blessed with extensive revivals of religion. They swept, like fire in dry stubble, all over the country. The people went from far and near to attend them -- were awakened and converted to God.

During this year, Mr. Walker entered Breckinridge County and organized a society at Thomas Stith's, on the road from Hardinsburg to Louisville, 16 miles from the former place. The names of the members who composed this society were:

Thomas and Rhoda Stith,

William and Nancy Stith,

Richard and Betsey Stith,

Matthew Sanders,

Mrs. [Lucy Stith] Jordan and her two daughters (Lucy and Katy).

Little Dick Stith and his wife, and [son of Joseph?]

Betsey Hardaway --- thirteen members."

The year, 1804, has been questioned and must be a few years off. Rhoda Jones Stith had a daughter born in Virginia in 1806. But that does not mean some of the families did not arrive in 1804.

The 1999 collection of excerpts about the Stiths from William Byrd's Secret Diaries "The Stiths: Colonial Life in Charles City County, Virginia 1709-1741", covered the life Major John and Jane Stith's sons, John II and

Drury I.

Life in Virginia in the 1600s was often short. Jane had already buried two husbands before she met and married John Stith. Passage was claimed for the young couple, Thomas Gregory and Ja. Gregory, in February 1653. (Claims were often several years after the actual passage took place.). She was the second wife of Joseph Parsons. Parsons died before 1656. Probate records show that widows remarried very quickly because women in Colonial Virginia were in short supply. Life in the early days being so uncertain, women often gave a son, or even a daughter, their family name, to make sure they would be remembered by their children. Hence it is surmised that Jane's maiden name was Drury. As a result, blended families were more the rule than the exception.

A note on Virginia counties: Charles City was one of the 8 original shires formed in Virginia in 1634.

In 1703, Prince George County was separated from Charles City. It was located south of the James River. In 1732, Brunswick County was formed from Prince George, followed by Amelia and Dinwiddie. In 1746, Lunenburg split from Brunswick. From Lunenburg, Halifax (1752), Bedford (1754), Charlotte (1765 and Mecklenburg (1765) were formed. Bedford gave rise to Campbell County in 1782 and Franklin in 1786.

Drury I. In the early 1690s, Drury I was married to Susanna Bathurst, the daughter of Lancelot Bathurst. It was at the March Court of Charles City County in 1741, that his will was presented by his widow, Susanna, and son, William, the executors. Unfortunately the will was badly mutilated.

Colonel Drury Stith II, son of Drury Stith I and Susanna, was born about 1695 and married Elizabeth Buckner, daughter of Major William Buckner about 1717.

In 1723 the boundary between Brunswick and Surry was surveyed with Colonel Drury Stith II in charge of the party. Stith was at this time a justice in Prince George County, but owned 892 acres in Brunswick which he purchased from Robert Bolling for "5 shillings and the natural affection he bare unto the said Stith." Robert Bolling had married to Drury's aunt, Ann Stith. (Robert Bolling's first wife had been Jane Rolfe, the grandaughter of Pocahontas.) Colonel Drury Stith later accompanied William Byrd on his commission to settle the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina in 1728.

Drury Stith II and Elizabeth moved to Brunswick. Colonel Drury Stith II was Brunswick County's first Clerk of Court from May 1732 until his death in June 1740. He was also the county's surveyor. The people who came to try their luck in the wilderness were adventurous and resourceful.

Colonel Drury Stith II and Elizabeth (Buckner) had the following children, recorded in the Bristol Parish Register: (Bristol Parish was in Prince George County)

1. Drury Stith III b 1718 d 1770 md 1) Martha 2) Mrs. Elizabeth (Jones) Eldridge

2. Griffin Stith b 1720 d 1784 md Mary Blaikley

3. Buckner Stith b 1722 d 1791

4. John Stith b 1724 d 1773

5. Richard Stith b 1727 d 1802 md Lucy Hall

6. Bathurst Stith b 1729

7. Thomas Stith b 1731 d 1801

In a way, these pages are about Richard Stith I. He was born 30 September 1727. He married his cousin, Lucy Hall, daughter of John Hall and Ann Bolling, on 29 December 1756. They were the parents of the 12 children, all but one traced to Kentucky in this collection.

Richard Stith I was appointed a justice of the peace and surveyor for Campbell County, Virginia, when it was formed in 1782. Prior to that time, He had been deputy surveyor to his brother Buckner in Bedford County, the parent county. Richard's first job was to run the dividing line between the two counties. Richard acquired a large estate in land. He began writing his will twenty years before his death. It is considered the best prepared will in the clerk's office. He died in 1802. The exodus of most of his children from Virginia began soon thereafter.

In commemoration of the bold children of Richard I and Lucy Hall Stith who travelled Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road to the new frontier of Kentucky in the early 1800s.

"In 1774 an empire building venture of the Transylvania Company sent Daniel Boone and some 30 heavily armed woodsmen to mark out a road through the Cumberland Gap of Virginia into Fincastle County (now Kentucky). By 1775, after much hardship and several skirmishes with Indians, Boone's men had blazed the first trail through the Cumberland mountains and into the lush valleys of Kentucky. Unlike the soil along the Great Valley Road, the Kentucky topsoil was rich and plentiful and Kentucky was thought to be a farmer's paradise.

"The fame of these Kentucky valleys created an almost frantic rush of migrations into this new territory. The Wilderness Road provided the means for the first settlements at Boonesboro, Harrodsburg, and many other sites to follow, mainly along or near the Kentucky River.

"In spite of numerous Indian raids on these early settlements, the lure of Kentucky persisted. The Wilderness Road became the extension of the Great Valley Road.

"It did not matter that the first Wilderness Road was not really a road. It was a crude trail. Only pack teams could cross the mountains until 1796 when the first trail was widened enough to allow a Conestoga wagon to pass. Many travelers before 1796 learned this fact only after traveling the length of the Great Valley Road and were then forced to abandon their Conestoga Wagons at Sapling Grove [Bristol] and pack their belongings on horses to undertake the arduous trek into Kentucky.

"Daniel Boone's contribution to American history was significant. At the time of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, Britain ceded to the United States the vast area from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River mainly because the U.S. had thousands of settlers living in Kentucky by then. By 1792, when Kentucky became a state, over sixty thousand people had taken the Wilderness Road into Kentucky. They did it with great courage.

"They travelled in sturdy Conestoga Wagons constructed of oak, with eight-inch-wide wheels, five feet high, and pulled by six draft horses." [Map Guide to American Migration Routes, 1735-1815, William Dollarhide, 1997]

I would like to add a sad note: on July 10, 1798, Barbara Overton Terrill Fontaine died en route to Kentucky at age 41. She was the wife of Aaron Fontaine, mother of twelve children. She was the great-great-grandmother of Ruth Fontaine Scott [Aaron (Barbara Terrill)-James Terrill (Deborah Hobbs)-William Maury (Martha Foushee)-Charles Beauregard (Irene Stith)-Ruth-(Walter Scott)]

Dedicated to my mother, Frances Shacklett Fast, her sister, my aunt Irby Shacklett Hardin, my mother-in-law Ruth Fontaine Scott, Cousin Allen Stith and especially Estie Stith Crabbe. These descendants of Major John Stith, and his wife Jane (Drury), spent many hours gathering data on the Stith family. John Stith appeared in the records of Charles City County, Virginia, about 350 years ago. He was one of the most influential men in the region along the James River. His five children married well and prospered in the new land. His great grandson, Richard Stith, settled in Campbell County, Virginia, where he owned huge tracts of land. But eleven of his twelve children headed west to Kentucky and settled in or near Stith Valley. There they raised large families, many of whom pioneered further west. Today there must be thousands of Stith descendants in America.

In anticipation of the 200th anniversary of the settlement in Stith Valley, and in an effort to present a clear picture of the Stiths who came there, I searched through the papers and letters of the family historians named above in order to trace each settler and his/her children and their children. Luckily I found a notebook with "Stith" written on the cover, my mother's effort to set out each one. I merely copied each one on my computer, adding to them data produced by the Ancestral Trails Historical Society -- census records, marriages records and wills from Meade, Hardin and Breckinridge Counties. To this was added information from the priceless correspondence of Estie Stith Crabbe. What she could have done with modern copying machines and electronic data processing! How many hours did this wonderful woman spend copying letters, articles, books for the many people with whom she corresponded!

She tirelessly tracked down Stith cousins anywhere she could find them to get their family connections. Even though here life work never reached final publication, Estie, we owe you!

Trace anyone's ancestry back ten generations and they will have over a thousand ancestors. This is about the heritage from one family. The Stiths. There are still many blanks to be filled in this family legend. Where did the Stiths come from, for example. And was the maiden name of our ancestress Jane, who married John Stith, her third husband, Drury? Many think she was Jane Drury.

So if your name is Stith, Hardaway, Jordan, Moreman/Moorman, Hightower, Saunders, Nall, Board, Tarpley, Bolling, Dowell, Wrather, Hoskins, Johnson, Anderson, Peters, Howell, Cain, Moore, Wiseheart, Blanford, Cocke, Hall, Sprigg, McGehee, Hynes, Buckler, White, Harl, Howard, Preston, Polk, Pasley, Harris, Purcell, Greer, Pulliam, Davis, Walton, Shrewsbury, Thorpe, Jupin, Morgan, Van Cleave, Scifres, Allen, Gray, Stehl, Crume, Alverson, Boling, Dent, Skillman, Robinson, Jones, Herndon, Truman, Gill, Cox, Dean, Lewis, Gullett, Clarkson, Woolfolk, Summers, Geohegan, Paul, Gilkey, Ferguson, Chiles, Park, Evans, Brown, Hooper, Isenhour, Lampton, McGuffin, Miller, Jaggers, Elliott, Henderson, Shacklett, Lochinour, Patton, Haynes, Kincheloe, Jenkins, Coffman, Buford, Withers, Kendall, Ball, Young, Partlow, Rawlings, Watts, Read, Buchanan, Reese, or Scott, you may be a Stith! (Or related to one!)

********************************************************************************************

In August 1954, Geo. M. Wilson in his "Just Ramblin" column in the Breckinridge weekly News, printed a letter from a former Breckinridge Countian, Mary Peyton Dent, a Stith cousin, and dear friend of Estie Stith Crabbe. She began it as follows:

"I have enjoyed your editorials at the beginning of recent months, telling the various happenings of historic interest which have occurred in each of said months. I consider them informative and educational, and think they should be clipped for future reference, "Lest We Forget" as we are so prone to do. I didn't remember the exact date of Lee's surrender, altho' I knew it was in the Springtime, for I recall that Gen. Lee, in discussing the terms with Gen. Grant, requested that his men be allowed to retain their horses, which were their personal possession and almost their only means of transporting back to their homes, and which would be sadly needed for the Spring plowing. And Gen. Grant acceded to this request.

"Gen. Lee's wife, the former Mary Anne Randolph Custis, known before their marriage as "The Heiress of Arlington", did not fare so well. She lost her beautiful estate, which she had inherited from her father, George Washington Parke Custis, that he had built from his own design, said to have been modeled after the Greek temple of Theseus in Athens, and which was the "Show place" of the surrounding country. This place beautifully located above the Potomac River, was taken over and made into a hospital for sick and wounded Federal soldiers, and its sweeping grounds became a National Cemetery, and was forever lost to its owner, and her children. She was granted a sum of money after the war was over, but her priceless antiques, and irreplaceable personal mementos which her father had inherited from Mt. Vernon, from his step-grandfather, Gen. George Washington, were never returned. Mrs. Lee requested of President Johnson the return of such of the relics as are in the Patent Office, but her application was refused, and Congress decided to keep them. Some are still exhibited in the National Museum in Washington, I have read. [NOTE: in the late 1940s, when my mother-in-law, Ruth Fontaine Scott, had a government job in Washington, she lived in dormitories built for female government workers called "Arlington Farm", located on the lower level of the Lee property. As Arlington National Cemetery grew, the "Farm" were swallowed up by the military dead of later wars. She sent me this article - HFS.]

"I was interested to read in "the News" recently that some Homemakers Club had reviewed a book, a recent best-seller by Harnett Kane, entitled "Lady of Arlington" a history of Mrs. Lee's life. It was one of my presents to myself, last Christmas, together with "Gone With the Windsors" two rather widely separated eras and persons. I wanted the Harnett Kane book for two reasons. One was the fact that I had another book by Harnett Kane, called "Woman of Fortune" a history of the life of Mrs. Jefferson Davis, the Second, and the two books went together I thought. My mother was six years old when the Civil War began, and ten when it closed, and she had very vivid recollections of those troubled times, and, like Margaret Mitchell, who wrote "Gone With the Wind", I was brought up on stories of those happenings.

"Another reason I was interested in Mrs. Lee, is that we have many mutual ancestors. She is related to the Stiths, Hardaways, and that branch of the Moorman family who are descended from Jesse Adams Moorman, who married Elizabeth Buckner Stith, in Virginia, and came with the Stith and Hardaway emigration to Kentucky, and settled in Meade, Hardin, Jefferson and Breckinridge Counties.

"There came from England to Virginia, in 1660, a boy of fourteen, who grew up to Col. Robert Bolling of Kippax and Farmingdale, and married first, Jane Rolfe, a granddaughter of the Indian Princess, Pocahontas, she died after three years leaving a son, John Bolling. In 1681, Col. Bolling married Anne Stith, daughter of Major John Stith, of Charles City County, the first of the name in Virginia. [The Bollings] had seven children, their eldest son was Col. Robert Bolling, Jr., of Bollingbrook, and he had seven daughters and one son. [Robert Bolling Jr.'s] second daughter, Elizabeth, married James Munford, their fifth daughter, Jane, married "Hugh Miller, a Scotchman". Their third daughter, Anne Bolling of Bollingbrook, married "John Hall, Gentleman, of Amelia County., and later of Edgecombe Co., North Carolina." Their fourth daughter, Lucy Bolling, married Peter Randolph, of "Chatsworth."

"Anne Bolling and John Hall, had, among other children, two daughters, also named Anne and Lucy. Lucy Hall married Richard Stith, son of Lieut. Col. Drury Stith of Brunswick Co., and his wife, Elizabeth Buckner. Richard Stith, a graduate of William and Mary College, removed to Bedford Co., and with his brother, Buckner Stith, surveyed Campbell Co., which was made from part of Bedford, and later surveyed the City of Lynchburg, around which he had large holdings of land. Many of his twelve children came to Kentucky after his death, and settled in STITH'S VALLEY, and other places in the counties mentioned above. Anne Hall, sister of Lucy, married Joseph Hardaway, cousin of Richard Stith, and their son, Drury Hardaway, married his first cousin, Ann Stith, daughter of Richard and Lucy Hall Stith, and came to Kentucky with the Stith emigration, and became the ancestors of the Hardaways, living in the same counties.

"Lucy Bolling, who married Peter Randolph of "Chatsworth", remained in Virginia, (very sensibly, in my opinion). His father was William Randolph, Jr., and his mother was Elizabeth Peyton Beverly, a daughter of Peter Beverly and his wife Eliza Peyton of Gloucester Co. The second son of Lucy Bolling and Peter Randolph was named Beverly Randolph, and became Governor of Virginia Dec. 1, 1788. He was succeeded by Gen. "Light Horse" Harry Lee. Anne Randolph, daughter of Peter and Lucy (Bolling) Randolph married William Fitzhugh, a man of large wealth, owning several estates in various counties, besides "Chatham" where he made his home, removing to "Ravensworth" in Fairfax Co., in the latter years of his life. Their daughter, Mary Randolph Fitzhugh, married George Washington Parke Custis, of "Arlington", and they were the parents of Mary Anne Randolph Custis, who became Mrs. Robert E. Lee.

"Sir John Randolph, brother of William, Jr., married Susanna, another daughter of Peter and Eliza Peyton Beverly, and their son, Peyton Randolph, was Attorney Gen. for Virginia, Speaker of the House of Burgesses, and President of the first American Congress. A sister of Sir John and Wm. Randolph, Jr., Mary Randolph, married Capt. John Stith, son of Major John Stith, of Brunswick Co., and a brother of Anne Stith, 2nd wife of Col. Robert Bolling, of Kippax & Farmingdale. He died young, leaving a son, who was brought up by his mother, with the assistance of her brother Sir Randolph, who sent him to Edinburg, Scotland, to finish his education. He became Rev. William Stith, an Episcopal minister, President of Wm. & Mary College, and author of the first history of Virginia. A tablet to his memory is in old Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Va. He married his first cousin, Judith Randolph of Tuckahoe. His wife and himself were both first cousins of Jane Randolph, of Dungeness, on the James River, (she a daughter of Isham and Jane Rodgers Randolph) who married Peter Jefferson, of Shadwell, and became the mother of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the U.S. as well as other noteworthy things, too numerous to mention.

"It will be remembered that Gen. George Washington, sometimes called "Father of his Country" had no children of his own. He married a widow, Mrs. Daniel Parke Custis, nee Martha Dandridge, mother of four children, two of whom were dead, and the two whom she brought with her to Mt. Vernon both died young. John Parke Custis, the son, while still in his teens married Eleanor Calvert, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, daughter of Benedict Calvert, he a son of Charles Calvert, Sixth Lord Baltimore, and a great grandson of Benedict Calvert, fourth Lord Baltimore, who married Lady Charlotte Fitzroy, daughter of Sir Edward Henry Lee, 1st Earl of Litchfield. Eleanor Calvert is said to have been only sixteen at the time of her marriage, which union proved to be very brief, as Mr. Custis died about seven years later, leaving four young children. Gen. Washington, promptly adopted the two youngest, his namesake, only six months old at the time of the father's death, and Eleanor Parke Custis, just older. "Nelly" Custis, as she was always called, grew up to be a great beauty, and much a favorite of her foster-father, and step-great-grandfather. She further gratified him by marrying a favorite nephew of his, Lawrence Lewis, son of Fielding and Elizabeth (Betty) Washington Lewis.

"So, it would seem that with all these Patriots and Builders of the Nation in her background, Mrs. Lee might have had more leniency shown her, and not had her possessions confiscated as "Spoils of War" since she, herself, had not taken up arms against the country for which her forebears had done so much.

"This letter began with an apology, and will have to end the same way. I started it July 1st, as you may see from the date. I came down with "flu" - Virus infection - whatever you may call it, the same day, and only now have been able to finish it, and get it off. I am fully prepared to attest to the fact the "Summertime colds are the worst ones." Regretting this turn of events from my point of view, as well as yours, hoping for better luck next year, I remain, sincerely yours, Mary Peyton Dent, Los Angeles, Calif."
