Jess: Regarding the issue of  the Ben Shacklett-two wives:
There is no doubt the records show two Benjamins, uncle and nephew, the latter being the son of Ben's half-brother,
Edward. Perhaps if you posted the attached it would help keep the record straight. I have photostats of records from Charles County Maryland for land transactions and John's will. Oddly enough, they were only a few miles from
the Scotts' "Indian Quarter" Aunt H.

I have been checking my information with Mrs. Fasts and Mrs. Clarks. These are the things I came up different. This does not mean they are wrong or I am, it just might be a type-o error.

14. Blant married to Sallie Richardson daughter of John Dave, you need to add his last name Richardson.

I have letters from Mrs. Clark in 1982. She might remember writing to me. See if she does?

Hope you don't mind me going over your notes and comparing them to mine. of course, I got dates and information from different families many years ago and I surely could have written down the wrong information. Have a good evening.

Jess: just a few answers to Vicki Fairchild's questions. Aunt H.

This is in answer to Vicki Fairchild's 14 Nov email.

I have searched Frances S. Fast's (my mother) files to answer his/her questions. She was pretty careful and generally used original sources. Some information (out of state) came from relatives who copied it from old bibles, or relied on memory. Again, even the most meticulous research makes mistakes. So below, I have gone to her original records for clarification. I have added some records that were not available 50-60 years ago marked "HF Scott."
Census records are only as good as the people who give the answers. (Also, people change their names, not always legally.)

>
lQ. John Hayden Taylor marrried 3/9/1819, I have 3/3/1818?
1A: Fast original says March 9, 1819
HF Scott adds: Hardin County Ky marriages 1793-1829 gives:
Taylor, John H. and Hannah Shacklett. 3 May 1819. Surety Solomon Brandenburg. John Shacklett senr., girl's father, gave written consent 9 May 1819
(3 March 1819 appears to be the date the license was issued. The date of the ceremony was later. Ministers did not always make returns giving the date of the actual ceremony.)

2Q. John Shacklett and Rachel Wimps daughter Barbara married Judson Willett.
I have Willett death date as 12/2/1828 and you have 9/9/1844?
2A: Fast original says Barbara MARRIED 12/2/1828 Judson Willett who died 9/9/1844.

Subject: Corrections: In reply to your letter dated November 14, 2000 . Here are some questions and answers.

To: Jess Scott

l. Judson Willet, I agree with Scott. I had looked at dates incorrect I agree that he died 9/9/1844 and married 12/21/1828.

2. You need to change your records on John, son of John and Rachel birth date. You have 4/5/1834 and Mrs. Fast and I have 4/5/1837.

3. John and Rachel's daughter Margaret . You need to change birth date from 10/3/1819 as Mrs. Fast and I have 10/31/1810. Her husbands full name is Valentine Thompson Kendall.

4. Horace T. (or Gager) Kendall was born 10/21/1874 you have 1874 only. The T was added later. I believe but no proof that his middle name was Gager but who knows, I don't. Mrs. Fast and I agree on birth date of 10/21/1874.

5.Daniel H. son of John and Rachel actual middle name is Ross not "H". Mrs. Fast and I agree that it is Ross. I have birthdate as2/16/1813 and you have

2-6-1813. I will leave for awhile to see if I can find my information and who gave it to me. I probably mistyped.

6. I correct Warden (Sallie) to Worden per Mrs. Fast original information. I'm sure this was something I could not read in a letter.

7. I changed eath date of Mary daughter of John and Rachel to 8/3/1864 per Mrs. Fast information. I again will try to check where I gotr this date or if I mistyped.

8. Is Lucinda Horn Sipes Willett the same as Cinderilla Sipes?

9. Is Parmelia the same as Priscilla.

10. Lewis N. I have Louis Napolian Sipes.

All I have checked so far. Happy Thanksgiving.

Joseph Lyle Shacklett was born 5/23/1905 and died (12/7/1991 jbs).  I met him and his wife Inez Evaline Kent in or around 1982 when I was working on this "stuff". He was a retired dentist here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Inez was born 11/12 0r 11/20/1912. Joseph had 3 children Lyle Kent Shacklett, Saundra Sue Shacklett and Curtis Joe Shacklett. I believe they
all live in Tulsa area. One of the son's is a dentist and I believe but don't quote me that one is an attorney. Joseph had 2 brothers, Elbert Franklin Shacklett (never married) 8/14/1905 died 12/27/1967, Homer Kemp Shacklett born 4/1/1918 living in Denver, Colorado in 1982 (died 11/12/1999 jbs) and married to Virginia Marie Cade born 11/29/1922, His children were Janis Kay Shacklett and Jayne Elizabeth Shacklett. Joseph's father was Homer Louis Shacklett born 6/20/1882 died 2/11/1957 married to Gertrude Kemp born 10/30/1883 and died 9/24/1974. Homer had brothers and sisters: They are

they are.

(b) Clark Homer Shacklett
(c) Laura Josephine Shacklett
4) Jennie L. Shacklett (b) 9/10/1889 no death date , married Tom Woods (lst)
and Frank Weathers (2nd). No children. Tom Woods died young of a brain
tumor. Frank Weathers was a cousin. I'm not sure if this means Frank
was a cousin to Tom or Frank was a cousin to Jennie. I have no
information on this. There were no children by either marrieage.

Millard Fillmore Shacklett was the father of
.
Homer Louis Shacklett. Millard was born 4/14/1857 and died 9/24/1916. His

From: Larry Barnes
Subject: Shackletts, Meade Co., KY >KS
To: Vicki Fairchild

Hello,

I descend from John B. Shacklett and Barbara Quick and
their son Benjamin W. who married Eliz. Ashcraft.

I have an A.L. Barnes, brother to my 2nd grgrandfather
that moved from near Meadeville in Meade Co., Ky. to
the Patterson/Burrton KS. area located about 35 mi. NW
of Wichita, KS in 1873. He lived near several
Shackletts as follows;

Absalom R. (1852-1900) and wife Anna R. (1859-1934)
both are buried in Nickerson, KS. This info is from
headstone. I do not yet have exact dates of death, so
I do not have obits.

Richard (1842-1914) wife Lucy W. both are buried in
Burrton, KS
Richard's obit says that he served in the Confederacy
in the Civil War, but gives no details. It does say
that he was from Meade Co., KY.

There is also a B.D. Shacklett, but I cannot locate
where he is buried. I believe his first name was
Blancet.

Barnes family history notes state that B.D.'s wife was
Anna Wimp, formerly married to W.K. Shacklett who was
killed in the Meadeville skirmish in 1863 and buried
at Meadeville cemetery. Anna was James A. Wimp's
sister. James A. Wimp (of Meade Co.) was married to
Jemima Barnes, sister of A.L. Barnes (1st Ky. Cav. Co.
F CSA). James Wimp and wife are buried next to A.L.
Barnes and wife in Star cemetery, south of Burrton,
KS.

It sounds like B.D. and Absalom R. could almost be the
same person, but how do you go by B.D. and your
tombstone says Absalom R.?

Does anyone know about these KS Shackletts and from
which families they came from?

It would be great if you could post above message.

Some additional information I've just located. Richard
Shacklett's obit states that his wife died in 1903.
The surviving relatives are brothers, Ben of Meade
Co., KY, Blant of Patterson, KS. (I think this must be
B.D.), an unnamed sister in KY and 4 children, Jack of
Wichita, KS., Elbert and George of Los Angeles, CA.,
and Mrs. Clyde Story of Fairview, OK.

Hi, Larry, I will go backwards. My mother, Florence Evelyn Shacklett was the
daughter of Benjamin Willett Shacklett, son of Benjamin Legister Shacklett,
son of Sophia Shacklett and Daniel Hayden Shacklett (lst cousins) and
children of John Shacklett and Jesse Shacklett. I am from 2 lienages as many
of the Shacklett clan is from, if not more than 2 sometimes 3 and 4 lienages.

You asked some questions earlier: Benjamin Woodridge Shacklett married
Elizabeth Ashcraft. Benjamin Woodridge was John and Jesse (listed above)
brother. Benjamin and Elizabeth had the following children; David Hayden,
John Gray, Richard, Sarah (Sally), Elizabeth (Besty), Benjamin Wooley, Jesse
Blancit, Elizah Ashcraft, Mary (Polly), Absalom, George Washington, Barbara
all with the last name of Shacklett.

My mother and her family were from Kansas. My mother was born in Cherryvale,
Kansas December 11, 1920, her birthday today. They lived in Sycrase, Kansas
for many years too. My mother and dad lived in Great Bend, Kansas, Pawnee
Rock, Kansas, Scott City, Kansas. I was born in Larned, Kansas as my brother
Michael Wayne Broadbooks (maiden name) and my sister Roberta Jean Broadbooks
in Scott City, Kansas.

I have a lot of Absalom's listed. There is a Absalom born 10/29/1817 married
to Sarah (Sallie) Taylor Hayden 6/9/1824

Absalom Redmond Shacklett married to Minerva Jane Humphrey
Absalom married to Amanda Slaskey,
Absalom married to Mary Ann Rebecca Laslie.

I have 11 Richards listed but none with the dates of 1820 - 1914.

Tell me how you decend from the Shacklet's and I will add to my charts.

I was studying Vicki Fairchild's data and see an Ann Wimp who married first a William Kendall Shacklett and second a Blant Shacklett. WK's father was Jesse Blancit Shacklett and mother Rebecca Kendall. Her data says nothing more about the second husband Blant Shacklett and shows no siblings for WK.

Scott,

I was just over visiting Thomas J. Stith earlier this evening. We were
talking about the old Barnes house and he remembered showing visitors over
there not too long ago. Thomas J. says he can remember Mr. Barnes playing
the fiddle at his house whild his mother (my Aunt Lena) accompanied him on
the piano. Thomas J. said old Mr. Barnes built the house for himself and
his daughter. Mrs. Barnes had died. The daughter, however, married a
carpenter and moved away. ( That would have been your great grandmother?)
That left Mr. Barnes to live alone in that very large house. Thomas J. said
his father bought the Barnes place in 1930 for $600 (or was it $800). The
farm was 200 and some acres. There would have been very few people who
could have obtained that kind of money in 1930.

I'm descended thru Armsted Barnes, buried at
Meadeville, thru his daughter Mary Fife, who married John Fife, who was
from the Garrett, Guston & Ekron areas. He died in MO in 1883, a tree fell
on him, Mary moved back to Kentucky and thence to Louisville. Billy Barnes
was her brother. The old Billy Barnes place is on T.J. Stith's farm. I was
there a couple of years ago. I wonder if that could be the old Armsted
Barnes place. John Fife's dad was Commondore Perry Fife, who lived in
Hardin County. He was a Confederate in Woodward's 2d KY CSA, disappeared
during the war. C.P. Fife's wife was Drusilla Wright of Meade County, her
father was Little Berry Wright, a native of VA, who moved to Meade. Can't
find where Drusilla or her parents are buried. Know there are a lot of
Wright's in Meade, but don't know how I connect.

Hello Jess, I think I told you that I was desc. from Armsted Barnes who is
buried at Meadeville Cem. His wife moved to Tx. after he died and is buried
in Cocke County, Texas. Mary Barnes, my great grandmother, married John
Fife, he was from Meade County, Hardin originally. He died in Chilicothe,
Missouri a tree fell on him, my grandpa Victor Fife was just around 8 yrs.
old at the time. Mary and her children moved back to Ky. after his death.
One of Mary's brothers was a Confederate soldier, his name was Armsted
Lovelace Barnes, he was a Corporal, in Co. F, 1st Ky Cav. after the war he
moved to Kansas and is buried in the Star Cem. at Patterson, Ks about 30
miles northwest of Wichita. John Fife's dad was Commondore Perry Fife, he
and Drusilla Wright were living in Meade County before the Civil War, he
joined Woodward's Cav. CSA and I have not found what became of him. I'm
thinking about ordering mil. markers for Benj. Shacklett (WAR of 1812
veteran) and Wm. K. Shacklett, also of 1st KY CAV CSA, both buried at
Meadeville. Bud Roberts, done a great job cleaning up that old graveyard.
He's a hero in my book.

Here's an important addition -- at least for the Fulton family. I'm a Fulton hunter and this information comes from the research of several Meade Co. descendants including: James L. Fulton, Jr., Dorothy H. Renaud, Ernest B. Thompson, and Polly (Fulton) Ehlen.

Mary, dau of John Blancit and Barbara (Quick) Shacklett, m1 Thomas Mills (no ch), m2 bef 1804, Daniel Fulton of Fayette Co., PA. John Shacklett's Will signed 29 Sept 1809 in Georges Twp, Fayette Co, PA, provides for daughter "Mary Fulton."

Daniel and Mary "Polly" (Fulton) Shacklett were parents of 8 known children, three boys born before 1810 Census.

1. John Fulton, b 1804
2. Unknown male, b est 1807
3. James Fulton, b est 1809
4. Mary "Polly" Fulton, b 1812
5. Hannah Fulton, b 1813
6. Priscilla Fulton, b 1818
7. Sarah Fulton, b 1821
8. Daniel Fulton Jr, b 1822

Daniel Fulton and Benjamin Fulton, brothers, (sons of James Fulton of Wharton Twp, Fayette Co. PA) came to Meade Co. with the Shacklett and Wimp families. Benjamin Fulton married twice and fathered 12 children. I suspect he may be the namesake for Benjamin F. Shacklett.

By the way, on 25 June 1819, Daniel Fulton purchased 415 acres in Georges
Twp, Fayette Co, PA, for $1600. Land described as "...the farm of John
Shacklett purchased from the other heirs."

***  Regarding Elizabeth, wife of James Payne.   I give her maiden name as HARRIS and they came from Orange Co Va. A James Payne did marry Elizabeth Harris d/o Thomas Harris. The Harris and Payne families were in Orange Co. and documents there do state Elizabeth was wife of James. I just don't have solid proof they are the James and Elizabeth in my line. There is,- to me- overwhelming evidence that they are in several other ways, but I should make the statement that further study is needed to substantiate this claim..
